Francisco Franco

Francisco Franco was born in El Ferrol in Galicia in 1892. He was going to join the navy, but instead he joined the army. In 1907 he joined the Infantry Academy in Toledo and graduated when he was 17. In 1912 he volunteered to be in colonial campaigns and was sent to the Spanish Morocco. He was promoted because he could handle the troops so well. In 1915 he became the youngest captain in the army. In 1935 he was appointed Chief of the Spanish Armys general staff, in this position he gained the most strength. On July 18, 1936, Franco's beliefs were broadcast. They acclaimed to a military rebellion. On that same morning, the rising began. Within the day, he was firmly in control of the Protectorate, and he marched to Madrid. On October 1, 1935, before the assault on Madrid, the army leaders met to choose a Generalissimo. This person would head the Nationalist Government. Franco was chosen, and became the Generalissimo. His government was a military dictatorship, but he organized the Spanish Fascist Party called the Falange. His regime was an institutionalized demanding system. In the Civil War, he was a very careful and efficient leader, and won the war on April 1, 1939. The war really wasn't fair, because it was the army and the government of Spain, Italy, and Germany against the people of Spain. As a result, the victor was obviously Franco and his regime. After the Spanish civil war, Spain was in ruins, so Franco stayed out of World War II. Franco came out of the Civil War as He! ad of State, government, armed forces, and the party, which showed his desperation to keep the power in his hands only. Spain made some major changes in its governmental system with Franco in power. The Falangist party melted into the background, so Franco was the only power in Spain. In 1947, Franco announced the restoration of the kingdom in Spain. Franco soon became known as a -Fascist dictator. Franco took over everything,

Civil rights era Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Civil rights era - Essay Example ies were reluctant to reacting at first; evidently, had the boycotters given up the suffering would have increased and probably more segregation laws set. The Montgomery Improvement Association also played a significant role in an era where African Americans fought for their civil rights. Under the leadership of Martin Luther King, the MIA was able to get its demands through the final verdict by the state’s court of law. The Little Rock incident and the Student’s Nonviolent Coordinating Committee all followed the footsteps of the boycott and were concerned about the treatment of African Americans by the society (Wallace, 1). The SNCC focused on depicting a better picture of the African Americans in the society through the campaign on observing voting rights for them too; moreover, the stress on feminism led to multiple protests and other campaigns that fought for sexual equality (HTI, 1). The segregation in schools affected the African American rights putting them in the lowest social class due to the lack of right education but the Little Rock 9 helped in the desegregation giving the African American youth an equal chance. Decisively, the Montgomery Bus Boycott is one of the major inspirations of the series of changes that are there in the African American history of civil rights; essentially, because the government of the United States and the white people experienced the heights that the black people were willing to go to for respect (History, 1). The boycott led to the formation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference that influenced other events such as the March on Washington where Martin Luther King made his most popular speech; nonetheless, the SNNC also played a core role in the march. Under the Brown v. Board, many of the cases are the foundation of the education that the African American youth is getting today; remarkably, today there are no schools with segregation initiatives restricting them to attend schools. At first when the Little

United Nations human rights council Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

United Nations human rights council - Essay Example As the newly appointed ambassador of the United States of America to the United Nations, the country I would choose to fill a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council, between the Netherlands and France in the Western Europe region, is the Netherlands. Both countries have decent human rights records that have met minimal international standards. However, after weighing and assessing the relative merits of the two regarding human rights structures and enforcement, I would choose the Netherlands. While both Western European countries have a developed network of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and independent oversight bodies intended to monitor, assess, and prevent violations, the Netherlands appears to be more open to implementing recommendations and dedicated to raising awareness of its problems among its citizens.Additionally, France's primary area of human rights violations seems more reprehensible, since it stems from within administration, specifically, abuse of powe r by the police forces, a problem that has persisted for years. As was done in this paper, future candidates to the United Nations Human Rights Council should undergo a vigorous vetting, wherein each category of human rights is investigated for infractions, recommendations, openness to and successful implementation of recommendations. The United Nations Human Rights Council is an "intergovernmental body" instituted by the United Nations, consisting of forty-seven countries. ... For the purpose of this paper, France and the Netherlands will be touted as two viable candidates for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council. Both Western European countries have laid out their own policies regarding human rights. As France points out, its long history has made it privy to the progression of human rights over time, dating back to its Enlightenment period. France's past efforts to recognize human rights include the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in 1789 and the adoption of UDHR in 1948 (with one of its own citizens, Rene Cassin, having a hand in the document). The country declares itself an avid advocate of international independent committees working with countries in adhering to UDHR guidelines. (French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, 2008) Non-governmental structures and embassy reports help France to monitor and address human rights violations. In 1947, the National Consultative Commission of Human Rights (NCCHR), an independent advisory board, was instituted. This Commission monitors all areas of human rights from police conduct to discriminatory hiring practices and provides overall recommendations on policies to the government (FMFEA, 2008; U.S. Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, 2009). Another main human rights structure is the independent National Security Ethics Commission (CNDS) which looks into allegations of misconduct by law enforcement officials (U.S. Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, 2009). As the Netherlands professes in its official human rights policy, the country works to abolish the death penalty worldwide, supports the rights and freedoms of women, children, and religious minorities, and is against discrimination towards

Ethical Leadership and How to Create a Positive Work Environment Essay Example for Free

Ethical Leadership and How to Create a Positive Work Environment Essay Leadership nowadays has encountered various problems. One of the most common one and which is contaminating the main business environment is that individuals at work are not engaging as they should. We have to ask ourselves, why is this happening and how can we prevent it? Dr. Charmine Hartel commented in the seminar that almost 20% of all the active workers in every organization do not work in favor of it. Instead they engage against the organization in various ways. This is a really big issue, because this means that there is something happening inside the organization and its leadership that is making these counter-productive acts. Recent researches that have been made show us that there are 3 different things that usually happens in the organization that get the workers to engage in a bad way their work as they should. * Work Environment * Negative Work Environment * Stress When the brain is under stress chemicals are released that weakens functions of the brain that gives us a higher level of structure (this is called the prefrontal cortex). When stressed, we are likely to engage inappropriate actions and lack the ability to regulate our emotions. With this in mind, we are encountering serious problems for the organization, because if these workers don’t have the use of their brain area they are not going to be able to engage the work they can and should do. Ethical Leadership The fruits of ethical leadership are Positive Work Environments, also known as PWE’s. PWEÂ ´s exists when the workers see their places as positive, respectful, inclusive and psychologically safe, and when leaders and coworkers are trustworthy and there exist an open diversity characterized in just policies and decision making. The entire above are needed to complete and get a PWE. PWE provides the set of emotional experiences necessary for human flourishing. We know that on average the positive emotional experiences outweigh the negative emotional ones. So, with this in mind, when you see your environment is safeyou have the ability to start being more creative and start being yourself. We should always keep in mind that an emotion is a response of the person when they have a particular event. They can have Destructive or constructive consequences. Organizations are responsible for the work environment they create. This is called the organization culture. When people and how the people interpreted the environment around their workplace. This is about how the organization context shapes the meaning and actions of its members. People management have the need to build resilience, diversity openness and be able to create a support to people trough change. There always exists the need to belong and to be valued for our uniqueness. Servant Leadership Many leadership approaches think about other things and focus their attention on what the followers need and develop things around them. Its an approach around the about the energy and direct it to the best place. With that in mind looking at the person as a whole being, not just as one more worker. One of the key things is that they can understand the core value of the workers and respect them as they deserve. There exist the emotion focus coping and problem focused coping they both have constructive and destructive emotions and impulses. The Giving Voice of Values (GVV) is designed to help individuals learn to recognize, clarify, speak and act on themselves when those conflicts arise. The focus is on how a manager raises this issues in an effective way.

Bach Essay -- essays research papers

A Great Contributor Of Music   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Throughout the history of music, many great composers, theorists, and instrumentalists have left indelible marks and influences that people today look back on to admire and aspire to. No exception to this idiom is Johann Sebastian Bach, whose impact on music was unforgettable to say the least. People today look back to his writings and works to both learn and admire. He truly can be considered a music history great. Bach, who came from a family of over 53 musicians, was nothing short of a virtuosic instrumentalist as well as a masterful composer. Born in Eisenach, Germany, on March 21, 1685, he was the son of a masterful violinist, Johann Ambrosius Bach, who taught his son the basic skills for string playing. Along with this string playing, Bach began to play the organ which is the instrument he would later on be noted for in history. His instruction on the organ came from the player at Eisenach's most important church. He instructed the young boy rather rigorously until his skills surpassed anyone’s expectations for someone of such a young age. Bach suffered early trauma when his parents died in 1695. He went to go live with his older brother, Johann Christoph, who also was a professional organist at Ohrdruf. He continued his younger brother's education on that instrument, as well as introducing him to the harpsichord. The rigorous training on these instruments combined with Bach’s masterful skill paid off for him at an early age. After several years of studying with his older brother, he received a scholarship to study in Luneberg, Germany, which is located on the northern tip of the country. As a result, he left his brother’s tutelage and went to go and study there. The teenage years brought Bach to several parts of Germany where he mainly worked as an organist in churches, since that was the skill he had perfected the best from his young training. However, a master of several instruments while still in his teens, Johann Sebastian first found employment at the age of 18 as a violinist in a court orchestra in Weimar. Although he did not remain there terribly long, he was able to make good money playing for the king. He soon after accepted a position as a church organist in Arnstadt. It was here that Bach would soon realize his high standards and regards that he had for music. In Arnsta... ...ations for Harpsichord,† his vast amount of toccatas, especially his â€Å"Toccata In F Major,† his collection of variations on organ preludes captured in the â€Å"Well Tempered Clavier,† his immense amount of fugues and chorales including his â€Å"Fugue in G minor,† major as well as his tremendous amount of chorales, and his Christmas and Easter oratorios, which was another schism in his music genre. Quite frankly, the list goes on and on and on. Surely, Johann Sebastian Bach never believed that his success would become so heroic and monumental. However, we today perceive him to be one of the key individuals to shape the music we listen to. It is no secret that his writings, especially chorale writings, are used to illustrate the principles of our functional system of harmony. It is in this example alone that it can be seen that Bach’s works have not only survived to the point where they are still heard and listened to, but they also still pro vide us with knowledge and understanding from which we can learn and discover music. It is for these reasons that the life of Johann Sebastian Bach was truly a great one and it is without any apprehension that he can be considered a musical great.

Discussion of the Dispossession of Lolita’s sexuality in Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita

In the novel Lolita, the concept of sexuality is greatly emphasized by the author. It is apparent in the character of Lolita and Humber that one is in control over the other. Humbert possesses greater power over Lolita to make all her needs possible. On the other hand Lolita uses sex as her way of gaining things that she desires. There is a big complex relationship between the tow since Lolita is in dispossession of her sexuality and Humbert is in possession of it.The sexual relationship of the two main characters can be considered unnatural because Lolita is only on her 12 years. But since Lolita is in dispossession of her sexuality she agreed to the consummation of their relationship although giving the consent to sexual relations with an old man is really no consent. She can by no means what so ever be held accountable for, or be said to legitimately consent to, the sexual relationship between the two.   The question of power and control between the two main characters in Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is crucially linked to the fundamental weakness and vulnerability of both the erotically obsessed Humbert Humbert and the childish object of his obsession, Lolita herself. The first instance of Humbert’s attempting to bribe and pacify Lolita with material offerings occurs at the point in the narrative where she first learns of her mother’s death.   This is also the point, following their first full-fledged sexual encounter, where Lolita initiates the practice of sardonic reference to the immorality and illegality of their relationship.   She has actually suffered internal injury from their intercourse and does not yet seem to have a manipulative purpose for verbally goading her stepfather/lover.â€Å"You chump,† she said, sweetly smiling at me.   â€Å"You revolting creature.   I was a daisy-fresh girl, and look what you’ve done to me.   I ought to call the police and tell them you raped me.   Oh, you dirty, dirty old man.† (Nabokov 141)Humbert then informs her of Charlotte Haze’s death.   Lolita’s grief and indignation are announced by the fact that in their next lodging they take separate rooms.   Humbert has already cited a list of purchases he has made in hopes of mollifying her—everything from a box of candy to a travel clock to a new wardrobe of summer dresses.   But it is her complete childish dependency and vulnerability that bring her to him.â€Å"At the motel we had separate rooms, but in the middle of the night she came sobbing into mine, and we made it up very gently.   You see, she had absolutely nowhere else to go† (Nabokov 142)Lolita â€Å"works† hard in order to get her allowance. It is atypical for her to do a work like that at her age because it means that she needs to have sex with him to get everything that she needs and wants.   Humber will ask Lolita to perform sexual favors for him so that he can give him allowance in retur n.This is one of the visible proofs that he is in control over her sexuality. The control is not only based on a psychological level but also on a physical level. Everything that she needs, from a simple candy or cartoon magazine and a visit to a movie house will not be easily granted if she will not perform any sexual encounter with Humbert. Although there are several times that she gains fulfillment by getting her desires, she is still in no control of the situation or her sexuality.â€Å"Her weekly allowance, paid to her under condition she fulfill her basic obligations, was twenty-one cents at the start of the Beardsley era-and went up to one dollar five before its end. This was more than generous arrangement seeing she constantly received from me all kinds of small presents and had for the asking any sweetmeat or movie under the moon-although, of course, I might fondly demand an additional kiss, or even a whole collection of assorted caresses, when I knew she coveted very badly some item of juvenile amusement† (Nabokov 183-184).Lolita becomes, in effect—and as a result of forces brought relentlessly to bear on her essentially vital and resilient nature, she is a live-in prostitute of the most venal nature. â€Å"O Reader!   Laugh not, as you imagine me, on the very wrack of joy noisily emitting dimes and quarters, and great big silver dollars like some sonorous, jingly and wholly demented machine vomiting riches; and in the margin of that leaping epilepsy she would firmly clutch a handful of coins in her little fist† (Nabokov 184).That understated â€Å"little fist† line is the moral center of this passage.   Lolita is still a child.   Whatever her learned capacity for degenerate bargaining, what she loses—and what she knows she is losing—by her required performance of sexually â€Å"paradisal philters† is the carefree childhood to which she is entitled by the developmental norms of her society.Even in school. Lolita experiences great trouble connecting with the boys in the way her teachers feel she should. She displays behavior that is really differently from the other girls. This also strengthens the fact of the argument that Humbert is in possession of her sexuality, and she cannot do anything about it.   â€Å"Dolly Haze, she said is a lovely child but, the onset of sexual maturing seems to give her trouble† (Nabokov 193).  Humbert deprives Lolita of every possibility of salutary contact with males her own age.   In fact he deprives her of performing any and all activities that will drive her away from his desires for addictive gratification.   Part of this is his fear that Lolita will tell other people the kind of life thay have whenever they are together.Participation in school theatricals becomes a particular source of tension for Humbert.   This issue is resolved, in typical fashion, by an unusually exciting favor.   During a visit to her school, Humber t comes to a classroom where Dolly is quietly studying in the company of another girl. â€Å"I sat beside Dolly†¦and unbuttoned my overcoat and for sixty-five cents plus the permission to participate in the school play, had Dolly put her inky, chalky, red-knuckled hand under the desk† (Nabokov 198).

College Essay Essay

The Ohio State University has been a college of my choice for multiple reasons. I always wanted to attend a college that would benefit me in a positive way. Before my visit to Ohio State I was undecided on what college I wanted to attend. However, after my visit to OSU’s campus I knew that Ohio State was the place for me. Ohio State is one of the few institutions that are committed to diversity and the overall success of its students. The rigorous curriculum, study abroad opportunities and student organizations offered will not only groom me as a scholar but a person as well. While OSU is one of the largest universities, the freshman programs discussed during my visit have assured me that I would not be a number, but a member of the OSU community. I would like to be in a positive environment where the level of expectation and measurement for success is paramount. From my research, OSU has a world class reputation in research and academics. As a prospective Finance major at the Fisher College of Business, I will plan to learn and operate in the values that reflect Max Fisher and the College of Business. With OSU being one of the top 20 colleges I felt there’s no other college that could fit me better. I feel The Ohio State University fits me best. I also can not forget the wonderful chant I was taught on the visit, when I say â€Å"O-H† you say â€Å"I-O.†

The role of prophecies in Oedipus the King

The role of prophecies in Oedipus the King This paper is aimed at discussing the role of prophecies in the play Oedipus the King by Sophocles. In particular, it is necessary to show how different characters attempt to respond to the predictions, which they do not wish to come true, and explain the effects of their actions. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The role of prophecies in Oedipus the King specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Overall, it is possible to say that by attempting to prevent the prophecies from being fulfilled, they only seal their fate and eventually suffer the misfortunes that they fear so much. In order to better illustrate this argument, we need to speak about such characters as Laius and Oedipus. Laius is the rule of Thebes; he learns from oracle that his son Oedipus will kill him and usurp his throne. This is why he orders Oedipus to be killed but they fail to execute his order and save the child. The main thing is that by giving this co mmand, Laius starts a chain of events which eventually results in his death. Oedipus slaughters him without realizing that Laius is his father. Provided that this character decided to take no action in response to the prophecy, the disaster could have been averted. This is the cruel irony of this tragedy. The main error that this character commits is that he prefers to escape his destiny rather than face it. He decides to kill his son rather than try to educate him. Certainly, Laius does not believe the course of events cannot be changed but he attemps to do by relying on brutal force instead of courage, perseverance, and love. In his turn, Oedipus behaves in a very similar way. He is adopted by Polybus, the King of Corinth. For a very long time, he does not know that Polybus and his wife Pariboea are not his real parents. Yet, he learns from oracle that in the future, he will murder his father and marry his mother. Oedipus flees Corinth in order to avoid this catastrophe, althoug h he does not believe himself to be capable of committing such an atrocity. Again, if he had chosen to stay at home, the oracle’s prophecy might have never come true. Both these characters prefer to run away from danger rather than face it. This might be one of the reasons why misfortunes befall them. As it has been said before, Oedipus accidentally slaughters Laius and marries Jocasta, his mother. Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More It should be noted that Oedipus mistakes his father for a mere townsman with whom he had a quarrel and killed. He feels practically no remorse for killing this person. Oedipus’ primary concern is that this man is not his father. For a long time, he lives thikning that no danger threatens him and his family. However, later he learns terrible truth about himself. Overall, prophecies are the main drivers of the plot. Every step that characters take is an attempt to escape destiny; yet, these prophecies turned to be self-fulfilling. Sophocles makes the readers think about possible outcomes provided that the main characters had decided to take no action or to behave in a different way. Sophocles does not try to depict human beings as creatures who are entirely devoid of free will. Both Laius and Oedipus are very strong-willed people, but sometimes they lack courage to face challenges. Through these characters Sophocles urges the reader think primarily about the ethical implications of their actions. Sophocles. Oedipus the King (transl. by David Grene). Perception of Brands is curiously absent from the customer’s perspective and a strategy needs to be devised as a unique selling point (USP) of Canadian ArcticTM. Diamonds are expensive products and it is recommended that Market Segmentation is done for the US market where the company wishes to market it product. It has been observed that there are four kinds of potential buyers in the market viz., Baby Boomers (37-55 years/78 million), Generation X (25-36 years/45 million), Generation Y (18-24/71 million) Gifters, Self Gifters, and Retailers. Retirement Planning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 4

Retirement Planning - Essay Example One must consider all your current expenses and how your financial needs and responsibilities will change over time as one approaches retirement age. Once a person reaches retirement age many of your current day to day expenses such as gas, car payments and maintenance, and other family expenses will diminish. Other financial responsibilities will most likely be paid off such as personal loans and mortgage payments, but there are other expenses that will likely increase such as medical expenses and entertainment. On average conservatively speaking individuals need around 80% of their current income in order to be able to live with the same current standard of living after retirement, but if one plans to do a lot of traveling and entertainment your allocation for retirement income will need to increase to 100% -120% of your current income in order to meet your future financial needs after retirement sets in (Hazell, 2012). By carefully planning and analyzing all your current and future expenses your budget allocation will reflect your future financial needs and be able to plan ahead in order to find out how much extra savings one must allocate every month in order to meet your retirement goals and lifestyle choices. In order to maximize my return on investment while maintaining a conservative risk profile for risk adverse investors I will diversify my
